ABBY Marie KING
Abby King is a fashion designer, dancer, choreographer, and performing artist based in the Twin Cities. As a multifaceted creative, Abby takes inspiration from various forms of art and expression. Her passion for design began with her love for playing dress-up as a young girl. As she got older, her love was expressed through thrifting, vintage clothing, and second-hand fashion. With structure, comfort, and quality at the forefront, Abby is on a mission to bring slow, sustainable designs into the mainstream. Abby is beyond thankful for all the knowledge and support she has received during her time in the apparel technologies program at Minneapolis College. She prides herself on creating playful garments of detail, versatility, and distinction for her upcoming brand, Material Gal Co.

For this collection, I was inspired by various notions, hardware, patterns, and textures. Playing with a mix of different fabrics for each look: denim, wool suiting, suede, satin, tulle, and patterned cottons. The name of the line, “Junk Drawer!” stemmed from the idea of rummaging through your junk drawer and finding forgotten treasures. Now let's take those treasures, get crafty, and revamp your wardrobe. These designs have classic silhouettes, allowing the details to speak for themselves. Using primarily vintage, deadstock, and secondhand materials, I am creating garments from people’s unwanted ‘junk’ and helping keep excess waste out of landfills.
